As November 1 approaches, the Cronulla Sharks and North Queensland Cowboys have not yet initiated contract extension discussions with their star wingers, both of whom are likely to draw interest from competing teams.
Following a disappointing performance that left the Cowboys toward the bottom of the NRL ladder, head coach Todd Payten needs to implement significant changes during this off-season to secure his position. While he has already acquired Reed Mahoney from the Canterbury Bulldogs and is reportedly interested in players like Jonah Pezet, his main focus will inevitably shift to player retention as the deadline nears.
Reports from News Corp suggest that the Cowboys have not yet begun negotiations with winger Murray Taulagi, a six-time QLD Maroons representative and two-time Australian Kangaroo. With his current contract expiring at the end of the 2026 NRL season, Taulagi is in a prime position to engage with rival clubs starting November 1, making it vital for the Cowboys to act swiftly. Since debuting in 2019, the 26-year-old has scored an impressive 61 tries in 108 matches, undoubtedly making him an attractive option for other teams if his future remains unresolved.
Similarly, the Sharks have yet to commence talks with Sione Katoa, a Tongan international who has also left his mark on the NRL by scoring 83 tries in 128 matches since his debut in 2018.
