This week, the NRL is set to trial a contentious kick-off rule that was previously rejected by clubs during the pre-season, potentially adding more unpredictability to the game.
In January, the NRL suggested a new rule allowing the team that concedes points to choose between receiving or taking the kick-off.
The intention behind this proposal was to minimize lopsided scores and enhance the competitiveness of matches.
Super coach Wayne Bennett has been a strong advocate for the rule, telling critics during pre-season discussions to "stop whingeing about it."
With several teams now out of the finals race, the NRL will implement the rule in the Broncos-Storm game at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.
On Monday night's NRL 360, journalist Brent Read supported the trial, while fellow reporter Dean Ritchie expressed skepticism, admitting it could increase the game's randomness.
"I don't think the side that concedes points should be given an option," Ritchie stated.
"It depends on whether you value possession or field position, and that will depend on the circumstances of the game. It adds a layer of unpredictability, I guess."
