The crucial issue in the ongoing negotiations surrounding Brisbane Broncos dummy half Billy Walters has been identified as money and contract value.
For several weeks, Brisbane has engaged in intense discussions with Walters, aiming to secure his future, even with four other dummy halves already signed for 2027.
The Broncos currently have Blake Mozer, Cameron Bukowski, Cory Paix, and Ben Hunt available for the number nine position. However, Walters is considered the standout option among them. Despite spending much of this season recovering from an ACL injury, the club is eager to keep him.
Reports indicate that a two-year contract offer has been made, but an agreement has yet to be reached. Journalist Travis Meyn commented on the situation during an appearance on SEN Radio, emphasizing that financial matters are the main hurdle.
"The Billy Walters thing just hasn't resolved itself yet," Meyn noted on SENQ Breakfast.
"The Broncos have made him an offer. He's desperate to stay there, he loves the club, he doesn't want to go anywhere."
"But they just haven't been able to get his signature over the line. There's been some toing and froing around terms of money and the like."
This financial struggle is not surprising, given the club's salary cap situation.
Although they will lose Payne Haas to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of the year, Brisbane is in talks to extend Xavier Willison. The club also has significant funds allocated for future deals involving notable players such as Reece Walsh, Kotoni Staggs, Ezra Mam, and Patrick Carrigan.
