Penrith is intensifying its efforts to hold onto Nathan Cleary, with reports indicating that PNG is contemplating a groundbreaking offer for the star half.
The Chiefs cannot formally approach Cleary until November 1, but they will be prepared if he reaches that date without a new contract from the Panthers.
As stated by CODE Sports, the Chiefs are considering a deal that would total $6 million over four years, equating to $1.5 million annually.
This would make it the most lucrative deal in NRL history on a per-season basis.
Additionally, this amount would be tax-free, and Cleary would also receive tax-exempt third-party agreements.
The financial terms are something the Panthers cannot compete with.
Over the proposed four-year contract, Cleary would stand to gain at least $2.5 million more than if he remained in Penrith, due to tax advantages.
The Panthers are also striving to retain other key players like Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo, with Yeo's extension reportedly on the verge of announcement.
If Cleary decides to move to Port Moresby, he will reunite with his former teammate Jarome Luai. Current Panthers player Brian To'o has also signed with PNG.
In addition to Cleary, the Chiefs are eyeing other halves, including Sam Walker and Zane Harrison.
