Rocco Berry has expressed confidence that young halfback Jett Cleary will force his way into the NRL picture in 2026 and begin carving out his own identity at the top level.
The promising junior, who is the younger brother of Penrith playmaker Nathan Cleary, has long been the subject of speculation over when he will step up to first grade.
Cleary turned heads last season with strong NSW Cup outings, highlighted by a game where he crossed for two tries and produced two try assists in a 68-6 victory over the Rabbitohs.
Across 13 NSW Cup appearances he played a pivotal role as the Warriors captured the NSW Cup Grand Final, beating St George Illawarra and becoming the first side from outside New South Wales to claim the trophy.
With Luke Metcalf likely sidelined recovering from an ACL until about Round 6, a short-term vacancy could open an avenue for Cleary to stake his claim.
That said, the Auckland squad is stocked with half options, so he may need further development in the NSW Cup before an extended NRL run.
"We've got a lot of halves there too, but he's talented and comes from great stock. He's been looking good and I'm sure he'll have a goal as a debut this season."
Berry suggested the round-one selection could favour experience, with Te Maire Martin or Tanah Boyd in the frame for a more seasoned combination.
"Not idea to be honest, there's Tanah and Te Maire there, there's a lot of experience there. So I'm not too sure, but it'll be cool to see him get a debut if he gets one."
Either way, Berry believes Cleary has the tools and temperament to transition to NRL level when his opportunity comes.
