The North Queensland Cowboys have made a significant move to secure their local talent, Tom Chester, by extending his contract for two years, ensuring his stay in Townsville until the end of the 2029 season.
This extension solidifies Chester's role in the club's vision for the future, especially as he has clawed his way back into the top-tier league after facing a challenging early career marred by several ACL injuries.
Since making his debut for the Cowboys in 2022, Chester has played 18 matches and is beginning to display his versatility alongside his attacking potential.
Though he is presently utilized as a centre, the team has recognized him as a promising long-term candidate for the fullback position, particularly as they prepare for life post-Scott Drinkwater.
In his latest performances, Chester has stood out with impressive statistics over six games, scoring two tries, achieving five line breaks, and making 30 tackle breaks, averaging an incredible 184 running metres per game.
The Cowboys regard him as an essential element of their developing spine and a player who can adapt to various roles within the backline.
"Much like Jaxon Purdue last week, there is always an air of excitement that runs through the club when we are able to keep one of the North Queensland kids at home long-term," noted Cowboys recruitment manager Clint Zammit.
"Tommy has faced more adversity than most to start his career and we have been thrilled to watch him announce himself on the NRL stage this year."
"We see centre as his best position for now, but Tom is another who can fill a number of other positions if required. He came through the junior grades as a half and played much of his Queensland Cup at fullback, so he provides Todd and his staff with great versatility if the need arises."
