Both the Sydney Roosters and Manly Sea Eagles are reportedly taking steps that could lead to an early switch for Daly Cherry-Evans, according to former rugby league player and analyst Matty Johns.
The Sydney Roosters appear to be Cherry-Evans' most likely destination, although coach Trent Robinson noted that discussions with him have only progressed to preliminary stages since the last discussions six weeks ago.
The Roosters now have a larger budget to work with following Brandon Smith's transfer to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
In addition, rumors have emerged that veteran halfback Chad Townsend is being offered to clubs in England, which has led Johns to believe the Roosters are attempting to create room for Cherry-Evans in their lineup before the June 30 deadline.
Johns stated on SEN Radio, "There's been a bit of talk about this the other day when players were being released (by the Roosters) and I said 'ah for DCE for next year'...
But they were so urgent to get rid of some blokes and now it's come out that Chad Townsend (is being offered to rival clubs).
I'm thinking what's at play here? Is there a chance of him (DCE joining before the June 30 deadline)."
This combination of player movements and financial flexibility suggests that the Roosters are positioning themselves to potentially secure Cherry-Evans ahead of time.
