In a significant move for the Exeter Chiefs, young talent Charlie Poynton will join the rugby union club for the 2026-27 season.
Previously associated with South Sydney Rabbitohs, Poynton has a diverse sporting background, excelling in both rugby league and rugby union during his youth.
At just 19 years old, Poynton has showcased his athletic ability through an impressive highlight reel that demonstrates his skills as a backline utility.
Having participated in rugby union at under 16 and under 18 levels with Australia, he is now set to return to the 15-man game, aiming for potential representation for Australia, New Zealand, or England.
Poynton expressed enthusiasm about joining Exeter, saying, "Signing with Exeter Chiefs was an opportunity that really excited me. The club has a great reputation and a strong vision for the future."
He continued, "I'm looking to make the most of the opportunity, keep improving every day and establish myself as a player at this level." His ambitions include contributing to the team and being part of a successful period for the club.
While he had the chance to progress into the NSW Cup next year, Poynton opted to transition back into rugby union. He was recognized as a promising prospect had he remained in rugby league.
The expectations surrounding Poynton in rugby union are high, with Exeter's director of rugby, Rob Baxter, indicating he could fill a valuable position on the wing or at fullback.
Baxter noted, "Charlie is an exciting, young English-qualified player who has been playing for Manly Marlins over in Australia."
With injuries affecting the team, Baxter saw Poynton's arrival as a way to strengthen their options, acknowledging the unique skills he brings from his rugby league experience.
