Challenges Ahead in US Sports Market

The NRL has two more years of Las Vegas season openers contracted, but is eyeing off more ambitious global expansion.

The NRL faces challenges in the US market, as Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys acknowledged the difficulties ahead.

In a recent discussion, V'landys stated that it would "take a lot longer than we thought it would" to establish a foothold in the fiercely competitive American sports landscape.

Despite these challenges, he noted that the upcoming fixture in Las Vegas could significantly benefit the game's popularity back in Australia.

Additionally, V'landys highlighted the influence of Fox Sports in shaping the NRL's approach. He explained, "They wanted all three games on the one channel to get momentum."

According to him, Fox has conducted thorough analytics and concluded that consolidating games would attract more viewers. He remarked, "So we've got to go with what they believe."

V'landys also mentioned that these arrangements are made as "a small gesture for us" from Fox.
