Cameron Murray Considers Switch to Rugby Union

One of the top forwards in the NRL, Cameron Murray, the captain of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, has revealed that he is open to the idea of transitioning to rugby union. This statement comes as a surprise, especially considering he is currently under contract for another three years, which runs until the end of 2028. With a salary exceeding $1 million per season, he is among the highest earners in the sport; however, this hasn't deterred him from considering a switch.

Murray expressed that while he is intrigued by the possibility of moving to rugby union, he has no intention of leaving the NRL until his current contract is fulfilled. This means he would forfeit the chance to participate in the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will take place in Australia.

Nonetheless, he remains open to the potential of a future in rugby union, following in the footsteps of players like Joseph Suaalii, Joseph Manu, and Mark Nawaqanitawase, who have also made similar transitions from the NRL.

In a conversation on UNSCRIPTED by Josh Mansour, Murray stated, "Yeah, I could," when asked about the prospect of switching codes to join the 15-man game. He added, "I miss schoolboy rugby a little bit, but I think it'd be arrogant to think it's going to be as fun." He acknowledged the challenges of schoolboy rugby and reflected on how he hasn't played union in a decade, saying, "Schoolboy rugby wasn't easy, but I was playing both at the same time."
