Panthers supporters are urging the NRL club to reconsider their decision regarding Daine Laurie, who will not be offered a new contract for 2026. This rallying cry follows a commendable performance by Laurie during Penrith's recent 28-4 defeat to the Bulldogs. In this match, head coach Ivan Cleary opted to rest several first-grade players, leading to an influx of new faces on the field.

Playing in the fullback position, usually held by NSW and Kangaroos star Dylan Edwards, Laurie stood out as one of the Panthers' best players despite the loss. The 26-year-old made a significant impact by saving a try with an impressive tackle on Connor Tracey. Additionally, he showcased his skills with a remarkable cut-out pass that led to the Panthers' only try in the second half.

Laurie's performance was further highlighted by a missed try from the Bunker, a line break, four tackle breaks, and a line break assist. As a result, Panthers fans have been vocal in their support, passionately calling for the club to rethink their decision to part ways with him.

Since joining the Panthers at the start of 2024, Laurie has consistently stepped up whenever called upon. While he often fills in for Edwards, he has also played on the wing and from the interchange bench. However, Laurie is among several fringe first-graders informed by the Panthers that they are free to seek other club opportunities for 2026. Most of the players who participated in the recent match are either already signed to new teams for next season or are expected not to have their contracts renewed.

For instance, Brad Schneider has signed with the Dolphins, and Mavrik Geyer will join the Wests Tigers. Other players who are out of contract, including Laurie, Soni Luke, Austin Dias, Zac Lipowicz, Riley Price, and Luke Sommerton, are likely to leave during the off-season.

Laurie's ambition is to secure a starting fullback position in the NRL, a prospect that seems unlikely at the Panthers due to the presence of Edwards. "That's definitely the goal. It's obviously hard (to achieve that) sitting behind Dyl (Edwards)," he stated after the game. "Every time I get an opportunity, I try and put my best foot forward."
