In a surprising announcement for Game 1 of the 2025 State of Origin series, Chris Butler has been appointed to the bunker, according to reports from zerotackle.com.
Butler is a long-standing member of the NRL's top panel of referees, but his selection for this high-profile role has raised eyebrows due to some questionable performances over the past year.
He will support Ashley Klein, who continues his role as the on-field referee.
Klein, at 45 years old, has an impressive resume, having officiated 412 NRL games, along with 29 finals matches.
His appointment for the upcoming match marks his 18th State of Origin appearance, and he also refereed the 2021 Rugby League World Cup final in England.
Additionally, Phil Henderson and Dave Munro will serve as touch judges for the series opener.
