The speculation regarding Matt Burton's future with the Canterbury Bulldogs is intensifying, even as the 2025 NRL season has just finished. Although the talented five-eighth and centre is under contract with the Bulldogs for the upcoming years, his position within the team has come under scrutiny lately.
The recent acquisition of Lachlan Galvin during the mid-season and the exit of Toby Sexton have raised questions about Burton's role moving forward. Phil Gould's recent remarks hinting at Mitchell Woods potentially stepping into the halfback role next year could mean Burton may have to transition to playing in the centres instead.
Currently, the Bulldogs have Stephen Crichton and Bronson Xerri secured as their starting centres. While Crichton has the option to move to fullback, Connor Tracey has performed well enough to keep his spot in the lineup intact.
Additionally, balancing the salary cap is proving a challenge for the Bulldogs, who have limited flexibility as they explore opportunities to recruit players like Kalyn Ponga or Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. Both players are contemplating moves away from their current teams, either immediately or after next season.
In regards to Burton's future, there were earlier rumors linking him to the Perth Bears for the end of 2026, which Gould later dismissed. However, recent discussions on the Fox Sports program NRL360 have indicated that the North Queensland Cowboys are now showing interest in Burton. "The Cowboys. There are rumours circulating," journalist Dean Ritchie reported on the show.
