The Brisbane Broncos are shifting their focus to re-signing three pivotal players following Kobe Hetherington's decision to leave the club for a fresh start with his girlfriend in Sydney. On Monday, it was revealed that Hetherington would join Manly next season with a four-year contract.
The reliable back-rower had previously agreed to a one-year deal with the Broncos for the 2026 season but changed his mind after his girlfriend secured a job in Sydney. Despite having turned down an earlier offer from the Sea Eagles, Hetherington is now making the move to Manly to support his partner.
"Kobe had agreed to terms with Brisbane but because his partner has a good job in Sydney, the Broncos were very understanding of his personal situation," said his manager, Chris Haddad. "We had formally signed with Brisbane, we did agree to terms and they were good enough to let Kobe go. It's a four-year deal from Manly, there's a lot more security than what he had at the Broncos so it's a good move for Kobe."
"We appreciate the Broncos for understanding things and I thank them. Kobe loves the Broncos and he is determined to win a premiership before he goes. They brought him there as a kid and now he leaves as an adult."
According to the Courier Mail, Hetherington's decision will enable the Broncos to concentrate on retaining Corey Jensen, Cory Paix, and Jack Gosiewski. All three players are currently without contracts for 2026, but Hetherington's exit has eased the salary cap constraints facing the club.
Front-rower Jensen is reportedly nearing the final stages of negotiations for a new contract. He is now in his fourth season at the Broncos and has established himself as a starting prop.
Paix and Gosiewski are two players that coach Michael Maguire has successfully helped improve. Previously, Skipper Kevin Walters had informed Paix that he could leave, but Maguire saw his potential and convinced him to remain with the Broncos.
