The Brisbane Broncos are currently mulling over some surprising Round 1 selection decisions, with developmental player Gehamat Shibasaki and edge forward Jack Gosiewski both in contention for a spot under the guidance of new coach Michael Maguire.

Shibasaki, a seasoned 26-year-old with stints at the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys, and South Sydney Rabbitohs, has faced challenges in establishing himself at the NRL level despite his talents in junior rugby league.

After a period playing rugby union in Japan in 2022, he returned through the North Queensland Cowboys in the QLD Cup before earning a train and trial deal with the Broncos.

Although initially not expected to make a significant impact due to Brisbane's depth in outside backs, Maguire, who has been hinting at a shake-up for the upcoming 2025 season, has acknowledged Shibasaki's strong pre-season performance could potentially see him replacing Deine Mariner in the starting lineup for Round 1.

Shibasaki, who played on the wing last season, is anticipated to shift to the centres this year, swapping positions with Queensland Origin representative Selwyn Cobbo, whom Maguire envisions on the wing.
