Michael Maguire Discusses Interest in Dane Gagai
Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has confirmed that the team is pursuing off-contract veteran Dane Gagai from the Newcastle Knights.
The rumor about the potential acquisition of Gagai emerged earlier this week after it was revealed that he had not received a new contract offer in Newcastle.
Gagai has been contemplating his future, even switching jerseys with other experienced players this season, hinting he might be ready to retire.
However, it seems that playing on is his preference as Gagai is reported to have received a one-year contract proposal from the Broncos, valued at approximately $300,000.
This would mark a return to the Broncos, where he kicked off his NRL career in 2011, although he played only six matches before heading to the Knights for two separate stints.
When asked about Gagai's possible transfer, Maguire acknowledged that negotiations are taking place and highlighted the value of Gagai's experience for the club moving forward.
"He's a veteran across every part of the game," Maguire stated during an interview with News Corp.
"He's probably playing some of the best footy of his career at the moment.
"It's still a work in progress; nothing is done at this stage, but if it eventuates, we'd be getting a highly experienced player, a family man, a great human, and someone with high standards.
