Brisbane Broncos sign Tongan international Mataele

Brisbane Broncos confirm major off-field appointment after dismal season

Martha Mataele captained Tonga to a Test win over the Cook Islands earlier this month, adding to her growing international career.

The 27-year-old made her Tonga debut at the 2025 Pacific Championships.

Brisbane have signed the outside back from Parramatta on a two-year deal beginning in the 2027 NRLW season.

She scored twice in nine appearances for the Eels in 2026, recording 50 tackle breaks and three line breaks while averaging more than 100 metres per game.

Born and raised in New Zealand, Mataele played rugby union for around seven years and earned two Black Ferns caps in 2023 before switching to rugby league.

She said the move offered a fresh start and a chance to be nearer family.

"It still hasn't clicked in my head [signing with the Broncos], I guess it's just very surreal, I have no words for it," Mataele said.

"What I'm most excited about coming to the Club is being around a group of quality players at a quality Club.

I came close to retirement in the past, so for me, every time I walk out onto the training ground or into a game, I play like it's my last.

"I go in without fear because the reality with professional sport is you never know when you could play your last game, so that's the mindset I always have."

Mataele said she wanted to bring personality and reliability to the team, as well as contribute to the club's culture.

"They can expect that when I go on the field, I always try to be the reliable teammate who can do the tough carries, take the high balls and be a solid player.

"I love the on-field stuff, but I also love contributing off the field.

"I love Club culture and I want to add to that as well."
