Brimson, Smithies called into England squad for must win Second Test

AJ Brimson is poised to make his debut for England as a fullback, while Morgan Smithies is in contention for an Ashes recall after coach Shaun Wane made significant changes to the squad following a loss in the opening Test at Wembley.

Having served as the 18th man in the First Ashes Test in London, Brimson is anticipated to step into the England No.1 jersey, replacing Jack Welsby, who has been excluded from the 19-man squad for the critical Second Test at the packed Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In addition to Welsby, other players facing the axe after last Saturday's 26-6 defeat to Australia are John Bateman of the Cowboys, Wigan prop Ethan Havard, and Wakefield forward Mike McKeekan.

Joining Brimson and Smithies in the revamped squad are Canberra Raiders lock Smithies, Wigan halfback Harry Smith, Leeds prop Mikolaj Oledzki, and former Gold Coast Titans centre, now playing second row for the Rhinos, Kallum Watkins.

Brimson earlier switched his international eligibility from Australia to England this year, intending to honor his mother's English heritage.

Smithies makes his way into Wane's squad after a successful season, having lifted the JJ Giltinan Shield with Canberra for achieving the minor premiership, while Watkins is on track to earn his 30th England cap this weekend.

Harry Smith, who has participated in England's last six matches against teams like Tonga, France, and Samoa, may partner with captain George Williams in the halves, while Mikey Lewis is expected to take on an interchange utility role.
