Brailey Nears Contract Extension with Sharks

Cronulla Sharks dummy half Blayke Brailey has indicated that he is nearing a contract extension with the club, despite previously rejecting an offer. As one of the NRL's standout performers, Brailey is poised to become a free agent on November 1 if a new deal isn't finalized with the Sharks by that date.

This scenario could spark a bidding war, especially since Brailey is regarded as the premier hooker available when his contract concludes in 2026. The potential entry of the Perth Bears into the race, with an unfilled 30-man roster and a substantial salary cap of $12 million, adds more intensity to the market.

Reports suggest that the Sharks' initial offer to Brailey was significantly below market value, which prompted Brailey and his manager, David Riolo, to request a reassessment of the terms. The Sharks are currently managing a tight salary cap, burdened by several high-value contracts and recent pay raises that have pushed their financial limits.

It is believed that fullback William Kennedy could be affected going into 2026, as the club has roughly $300,000 available to retain him. Nonetheless, Brailey remains a top priority for the Sharks. In a media interaction, he mentioned that the negotiations are progressing well, with reports indicating a potential four-year extension that would keep him at the club until the end of 2030.
