The Queensland Maroons have confirmed Darius Boyd as their head coach for the upcoming two years.
This decision follows the resignation of Billy Slater last month, with several prominent candidates like Cameron Smith, Ben Te'o, and Kevin Walters opting out.
This left the Maroons with limited choices, ultimately leading them to select Boyd to reclaim the shield for Queensland.
"It's a privileged position and I'm very grateful for the opportunity," Boyd remarked.
"I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us."
Boyd has extensive State of Origin experience, playing 28 games for the Maroons and recently serving in a coaching role for Queensland Under 19 teams.
QRL Chair Brian Canavan noted that Boyd has "lived and breathed what it means to represent Queensland," highlighting both his playing career and his role in mentoring future Maroons' stars.
Cooper Bai, Phillip Coates, Coby Black, and Javon Andrews are among those Boyd has trained, leading the Queensland Under 19s to successive victories over the Blues.
"His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader," Canavan stated regarding Boyd.
"He has built strong relationships throughout the pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential."
