Newcastle coach Justin Holbrook has acknowledged that rival clubs will likely pursue Bradman Best if he remains without a contract.
The talented Knights center, whose contract expires at the end of next year, has not yet reached an agreement for an extension, despite ongoing negotiations.
Reports surfaced on Thursday linking Parramatta to a potential bid for the 25-year-old, should he remain unsigned and qualify as a free agent in November.
"I think (there would be several clubs interested), definitely," Holbrook stated when asked about interest from other teams in the Knights junior.
"You'd think (there would be several clubs interested), definitely," he reiterated.
"Recruitment is ongoing. It's every week.
"The minute you sign someone, someone else is up for grabs as well. So, it's never going to end. It never will. And wherever that lands, you know, it lands."
Best had made his NSW State of Origin debut when he signed his last contract in early 2024 and has played a vital role in securing two series victories since.
The Knights also have fellow outside back Dom Young signed through the end of 2027. Center Dane Gagai, however, will depart at the end of this season for Brisbane.
With players like Herbie Farnworth, Latrell Mitchell, and Jack Howarth also unsigned, Best could be a key name in the market for 2028.
Beyond the Eels, the new franchise Perth appears poised to pursue Best's services as well.
"I love Braddy. I want him to stay. But, again, it's a juggling act. The salary cap's not that easy," Holbrook noted.
"If I had my way, I'd have every player, but there's a salary cap for a reason. So, hopefully, I'd love to see Braddy stay."
Gagai is on track to rejoin the Knights this Sunday against the Warriors after recovering from a hamstring injury.
In-form second-rower Francis Manuleleua and forward Pasami Saulo will also return after missing last Saturday's 44-24 defeat to Manly.
A Newcastle win will lock in a home final since the Knights have a bye in the final round. A loss could see them traveling to Sydney or Townsville.
"I'd love to play at home, but we've got to earn it," Holbrook said.
"If it doesn't happen, I'm OK with it. I honestly believe that we play really well away from home.
"Of course we want it for the fans and you don't want to travel unless you have to. If we get it, it's because we've deserved it. If we don't, it's the own fault."
