Wayne Bennett, coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, is facing challenges as player Siliva Havili plans to leave the club at the season's end.
Havili's playing time is expected to diminish due to the arrival of new talents amidst a season plagued by injuries to key players like Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Campbell Graham, and Cody Walker.
Bennett's return to coaching at the Rabbitohs has been arduous, and the club currently sits at the bottom of the NRL standings, raising the possibility of Bennett earning his first-ever wooden spoon.
He is already looking to the next season, hoping to benefit from a fully fit squad and new signings.
Havili, a 32-year-old veteran, has participated in 18 games this season, scoring two tries.
However, with the acquisition of Brandon Smith and Bronson Garlick, his chances of increased playtime next year have significantly decreased.
Smith, who recently transitioned from the Roosters, has faced further injury setbacks, ruling him out for the remainder of the season, while Garlick has signed a two-year contract with the club starting next year.
Havili is contemplating his future and may consider opportunities in the Super League or other NRL options.
He stated, "That's definitely an option (to go to England).
I've got options to play here too.
I still think I've got a lot of footy in me.
I'm just happy to explore my options.
I've got a young family to look after.
I'm open to every option and everything out there."
Additionally, Havili has been involved with Tonga's rugby league setup and has aspirations of transitioning into coaching within the Pacific Island framework.
He recognizes his career trajectory, saying, "I do understand where I'm at with my career and what I can give.
I also want to get into a bit of coaching too.
So that's something I'm looking forward to in that pathway within the Pacific Island."
