The Nick Meaney era in Melbourne is coming to a close as the seasoned utility back has reached a long-term agreement with the Perth Bears, set to start next season.
As reported by The Daily Telegraph, Meaney will fulfill the final year of his contract with the Melbourne Storm before transitioning to Perth in 2027, reinforcing the Bears' roster ahead of their first NRL season.
At 28, Meaney is expected to be the Bears' primary fullback, though his versatility allows the franchise to utilize him in various backline positions, such as centre, wing, or five-eighth. In addition to his positional flexibility, he also provides a dependable goal-kicking option.
Perth's recruitment efforts are ongoing; the team is now focusing on Meaney's Storm teammate, Tyran Wishart. The Bears are believed to have presented a compelling offer to Wishart, possibly highlighting the chance to be the starting dummy-half as a significant incentive.
While Melbourne aims to keep Wishart, they face challenges as their spine is already strongly established with players like Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, and Jahrome Hughes, all secured on long-term contracts.
