Bears Sign McDonnell: NRL Move Explained

A chain of unexpected links and timing off the field has directed Leeds Rhinos forward James McDonnell towards a new journey in the NRL, as the Ireland international has signed a two-year contract with the Perth Bears ahead of the club's 2027 entry.

McDonnell will reunite with his Leeds teammate and England international Harry Newman in Perth, as the Bears identified the forward through highlight footage that prominently featured both players in Leeds' edge combinations.

"I don't think he recommended me - I think they'd seen a bit of me and Harry playing together," McDonnell said to NRL.com.

At 187cm, McDonnell is among the first recruits for the Bears as Mal Meninga's new expansion team begins to establish its initial roster.

While Newman's transfer has received considerable attention, McDonnell clarified that the Bears' interest was more about seizing an opportunity rather than a direct recommendation, with the club impressed by his performance during Leeds' Super League season.

Negotiations reportedly commenced about two months ago, and McDonnell expressed his eagerness for the move once logistical matters were sorted out.

The decision was also significantly impacted by personal circumstances off the field.
