Mal Meninga, the head coach of Perth Bears, has stated that the club cannot afford to bring AJ Brimson on board for their first season in 2027.
Although their roster is generally perceived as more likely to finish near the bottom than the top next season, the Bears still have four spots available in their Top 30 and have made some solid signings for both current and future prospects.
"He's a great player... we've had no approaches as yet," Meninga commented during an appearance on Triple M's Sunday Sin Bin.
"I believe that he's talking to the Chiefs. He's a Gold Coast guy, so he loves the Gold Coast.
"He's probably just looking for opportunity, but from the point of view, we probably couldn't afford him to be honest with you."
Last week, it was announced that AJ Brimson had requested and received permission to explore a future away from the Titans, despite being under contract until the end of 2030, which understandably linked him to the Western Australian team.
Brimson wants to play at fullback, but with the Titans having several options at that position, he has fallen behind Keano Kini this year, while Jayden Campbell has taken the five-eighth role.
The team's spine is likely to stay the same next season since the Gold Coast will have Zane Harrison returning from injury to secure the halfback position, which places Brimson in the centres.
Debate around Brimson's exit from the Titans has grown, as the club aims to adjust their roster and salary cap, even though Josh Hannay's squad has shown some improvement toward the end of the season.
