Perth is making strategic moves for its coaching future, with Ben Gardiner signing a five-year contract to take on the role as Mal Meninga's assistant coach for the club's initial two NRL seasons.
Following this, Gardiner is set to become head coach in 2029.
This progression was confirmed by Samoa Rugby League, which referred to it as a "long-term succession plan." Gardiner's appointment positions him as a key figure for the Bears' future, while Meninga will focus on establishing the club in its formative years.
Although the NRL's official announcement did not emphasize Gardiner's future promotion, sources close to the project indicate that the plan is firmly in place.
This approach reflects a strategy reminiscent of the Dolphins' coaching transition from Wayne Bennett to Kristian Woolf.
Gardiner possesses an extensive background in coaching, having held various development and assistant positions at Penrith, Cronulla, and South Sydney, in addition to coaching North Sydney in the NSW Cup.
He currently manages the Samoa national team, bringing a wealth of experience to his upcoming roles.
