Barrett's unlucky break: How 2011 Samoa tour triggered new era for Jillaroos
Jo Barrett's memories from the Jillaroos' final tour to Samoa remain vivid for both her and her teammates. In September 2011, after extensive fundraising efforts, the squad was assembled for a trip to Apia.
During this tour, the Jillaroos faced a local team in a warm-up match before competing against Samoa, ultimately winning the game 42-14.
However, Barrett's participation in the series was cut short as she did not play in the second match.
In the years that followed, perspectives began to shift. Retired prop Heather Ballinger, who debuted with the Jillaroos during that very tour, noted in 2017 the significant improvements in medical support available to athletes.
The advancement of the Samoan men's rugby team has further motivated a new generation of female players to strive for similar achievements within the women's sport.
