Bai explains rift, PNG Chiefs beckon

Marcus Bai could step aside from the PNG Chiefs board if his son Cooper signs for the club's inaugural NRL season in 2028.

The move would bring the family back to PNG, which Marcus left in the 1990s to play professionally before winning titles in the NRL and Super League.

Cooper, 19, arrived in Port Moresby on Wednesday after Gold Coast allowed him to explore his options before the November 1 contracting window.

The Chiefs have targeted the forward since receiving approval to enter the NRL, and he has impressed local crowds in two Tests for PNG.

Last year, Marcus was angry when Cooper turned down a Melbourne Storm deal to stay with the Titans.

"He promised one thing… and then he went and did the other thing, and I was cranky with him," Bai snr told AAP.

Marcus said Cooper showed maturity by asking Gold Coast for permission and urged him to consider the move carefully with his girlfriend.

Cooper was due to visit on a family holiday after a hamstring injury ruled him out of the Kumuls' World Cup campaign.

"He's only young. He's still finding his feet, and if he comes here there will be a lot of pressure on him," Bai snr said.

"The crowd here are tough, they tell you straight up (if they're not happy)."
