The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) has criticized the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) for granting itself the power to impose charges on players overlooked by the Match Review Committee (MRC).
Calling this move "unprecedented" and an "overreach," RLPA chief Clint Newton stated, "The ARLC's decision to give itself unfettered power to charge players for on-field matters is an unprecedented overreach of extra judicial power." He contended that these powers are unnecessary and extend beyond the ARLC's responsibilities and expertise, particularly in safeguarding player health and safety.
Newton emphasized the importance of the MRC, asserting that it provides players, clubs, and fans with confidence due to its independent nature.
He noted that while no judicial system is flawless, the MRC has the right balance of expertise and experience among its members to handle player charges effectively.
This independent framework has been crucial for ensuring fair decision-making within the league.
