Recent developments in Sam Walker's contract negotiations with the Sydney Roosters have attracted attention, especially after comments from his player agent, Steve Gillis.
Gillis clarified on the Chiming In podcast that Walker has not declined a multi-million-dollar deal proposed by the club, contradicting claims circulating in the media.
He stated, "We met with the Roosters in Sydney, and Sam expressed to the club that he just wanted to put everything on hold until after the footy had finished this season."
Further complicating matters, Walker suffered an injury a few weeks ago, which has limited his ability to finalize discussions, though he is working hard to recover.
When asked if his camp was responsible for leaking information about the stalled negotiations, Gillis emphatically denied it. He quipped, "No, it's not the case; if I'd wanted to leak the story I would have had a photographer there that day."
He expressed surprise at Roosters coach Trent Robinson's implications and noted that he had suggested to the club that they release a statement clarifying their mutual decision to pause negotiations.
Despite any misunderstandings, Gillis emphasized that he maintains a strong relationship with Robinson, remarking, "I've known Trent Robinson for 40 years." He downplayed the situation, indicating it wouldn't hinder upcoming discussions regarding Walker's future.
The Roosters have reportedly offered a four-year contract extension worth $5 million. If an agreement isn't reached soon, Walker will enter the open market on November 1, where he is anticipated to attract offers, notably from the PNG Chiefs.
