Ricky Stuart's decision to pair two inexperienced halves, Ethan Strange and Ethan Sanders, for the start of their 2026 season raised a few eyebrows.
However, the young duo quickly silenced any doubts, delivering an impressive performance against the Sea Eagles in a thrilling Round One encounter at Brookvale.
In a dramatic finish, rookie half Ethan Sanders secured the win with a field goal in extra time, all while boasting just five NRL appearances.
This remarkable feat caught the eye of Storm icon Billy Slater, who shared his thoughts on the Billy Slater Podcast. He noted that the duo's playing style, with the halfback taking the lead and the five-eighth supporting, reminded him of the Raiders' legendary halves partnership from the 90s.
"Ethan Sanders is an out-and-out halfback," Slater remarked.
"I haven't seen much of him play but I was really impressed with him and Ethan Strange is playing like a genuine No.6 and they are playing old-school, traditional roles as a halves partnership.
"It's nearly like Ricky Stuart and Laurie Daley."
Slater praised coach Stuart for his bold choice to start two young players together, acknowledging that such strategies can lead to complications due to their inexperience.
Yet, the pair showed remarkable composure, helping the Minor Premiers to pick up seamlessly from their successful 2025 season.
