World Cup qualifier to showcase South African talent to NRL clubs

South Africa Rhinos coach Darryl Fisher sees the upcoming World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands in Sydney as a chance for his players to attract NRL attention for potential contracts.

The Rhinos will compete against the Aitu at CommBank Stadium on November 9, as part of a triple event featuring the men's and women's Pacific Cup finals, all vying for the 10th spot in the 2026 World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Currently, there are no players of South African descent in the NRL. However, with the Perth Bears set to enter the league in 2027, the rugby union-loving nation presents a promising recruitment opportunity for the new franchise.

The Rhinos' roster comprises players from both Australia and South Africa. Fisher has assembled a coaching team in both locations, including Perth rugby league veteran Isaac Thomas and former Balmain player Hudson Smith.

South African-based assistant coaches Deon Kraemer and Gilbert Modrau are also part of the squad.

Having played in the NRL for the Wests Magpies, Fisher is now focused on evaluating the available talent and plans to announce an extended squad ahead of the RLWC2026 qualifier.
