Willie Mason, a former NRL forward and cult hero, shared how his transition into acting occurred unexpectedly. The 45-year-old, who has played nearly 300 NRL matches for teams such as the Sydney Roosters, Canterbury Bulldogs, North Queensland Cowboys, Newcastle Knights, and Manly Sea Eagles over a career that lasted more than 15 years, is gearing up for his acting debut in the upcoming action comedy, Sunny Nights.

This series, set to premiere on Boxing Day on Stan, also stars Will Forte and D'Arcy Carden. In a conversation with News.com.au, Mason revealed that he never sought a career in acting - his opportunity came about through director Trent O'Donnell's support.

"I didn't have any aspirations to be an actor until this landed in my lap. But it's not a small part, and I was touched by Trent having this vote of confidence in me - he really went out on a limb for me, and had to vouch for me over in the US," Mason stated.

Renowned as one of the NRL's most beloved figures, Mason has represented New South Wales 13 times in State of Origin, played 24 Tests for Australia, and appeared in 3 matches for Tonga. He will assume the role of a character involved in Sydney's criminal underworld throughout the series.
