Former New South Wales (NSW) Blues coach Laurie Daley has expressed his openness to returning to the top job as the NSW Rugby League searches for a replacement for Brad Fittler, who resigned last week.
The decision came after negotiations between Fittler and the Blues hierarchy reached an impasse, with Fittler's request for a new two-year contract being a major sticking point.
According to veteran rugby league reporter Danny Weidler, there is a "push behind the scenes" for Daley to make a comeback as the Blues coach.
Weidler revealed this during an interview on Sky Sports Radio's 'Big Sports Breakfast' on Tuesday morning.
He clarified that while Daley may not be driving the push himself, there are people rallying support for him behind the scenes.
Daley's potential return to the coaching role has stirred up speculation and discussion within the rugby league community.
Many are curious to see if he would be willing to take on the challenge once again and if he has unfinished business with the NSW Blues.
During his previous tenure as coach, Daley led the Blues to their first State of Origin series victory in nine years in 2014.
However, he was unable to replicate that success in subsequent years, leading to his departure from the role in 2017.
With the vacancy now open, the NSWRL will be carefully considering their options for a new coach.
Daley's willingness to return could make him a strong contender for the position, especially considering his previous experience and knowledge of the team and its dynamics.
As the search for a new coach continues, the rugby league community will be eagerly awaiting updates on the potential candidates and the direction the NSW Blues will take in their quest for success in future State of Origin series.
