Selwyn Cobbo has dismissed claims that he will never leave the Brisbane Broncos due to his desire to stay close to his hometown of Cherbourg.
Currently, he is without a contract for the 2026 season and has been a free agent since last November.
Reports indicate that Broncos coach Michael Maguire wishes to retain Cobbo, but discussions regarding an extension are on hold to allow him to concentrate on his performance.
The financial reality for the Broncos poses a challenge, as they have made significant investments in players like Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, and Ezra Mam.
Additionally, they must re-sign Kotoni Staggs, while Adam Reynolds has expressed his intention to continue playing in 2026, further complicating the salary cap situation.
Many believe Cobbo might take a pay cut to remain with the Broncos to stay close to his Indigenous community, located 265 km northwest of Brisbane.
However, the 22-year-old has countered this notion, emphasizing that geographical ties will not influence his decision about the future.
After his standout performance in a recent 42-18 victory over the Bulldogs, Cobbo noted, "Cherbourg is not going to run away.
It's always home.
I love going back home when I can.
Wherever I go, I can always go back home."
Adding another layer to the situation, Cobbo excelled while filling in at fullback for the injured Walsh, which might bolster his earning potential if he continues to perform at a high level.
