Wigan prop Cooper hangs up his boots following concussion setback
In a heartbreaking blow for the Wigan Warriors, prop Mike Cooper has announced his retirement from rugby league due to medical advice following a concussion suffered in a clash against Leigh Leopards on July 5.
The 35-year-old former England international had been warned by medical experts that continuing to play could put him at risk of more serious damage, forcing him to make the tough decision to call time on his playing career.
Cooper, who had earned 13 caps for England and also played for Warrington Wolves and St George Illawarra, expressed his disappointment at having to walk away from the game he loves.
"I am gutted that my playing days have ended this way, however that's sport," he said.
During his time with Wigan, Cooper made a total of 23 appearances, showcasing his skill and determination on the field before ultimately being forced to retire prematurely.
His departure marks the end of an era for the rugby league veteran, leaving a void that will be hard to fill for the Warriors.
