Sydney Roosters prop Naufahu Whyte is filled with emotion as he gets ready to play his first NRL game in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand.
Despite being eligible to represent multiple countries, Whyte decided to play for New Zealand, fulfilling a childhood dream when he made his Kiwis debut during last year's Pacific Championships.
Though the tournament did not go as he hoped, wearing the black jumper was a significant moment for him.
Whyte's journey to the NRL has been challenging, with his initial move to Australia to join the Roosters' SG Ball team in 2020 disrupted by COVID.
He eventually returned to the club on a trial contract at the end of the year.
Returning to Go Media Stadium for the first time since the Kiwis' loss to Tonga last November holds special significance for the 22-year-old who grew up in Auckland.
The upcoming clash with the Warriors at the venue will mark his first NRL game in his hometown.
Reflecting on his decision to represent New Zealand, Whyte said, "For my family, grandparents, my culture, and heritage, I chose New Zealand.
I never really grew up in Tonga, I just have my heritage there.
And growing up, I idolized the Kiwi boys."
Despite the challenges he has faced, Whyte's determination and pride in representing his birth country shine through.
The upcoming game is not just about playing in front of friends and family but also about honoring his roots and making his mark in the NRL.
As he takes the field at Go Media Stadium, Whyte's emotions are sure to run high, marking a significant milestone in his professional rugby league career.
