Wests Tigers role pauses Carr's head-coach chase

Former Dragons interim coach closing on NRL return

Wests Tigers are reshaping their football department after a poor 2026 season, when early promise gave way to a rapid slide down the ladder.

Former St George Illawarra Dragons interim coach Ryan Carr is expected to join Benji Marshall's staff in 2027, Wide World of Sports reports.

The 38-year-old will set aside a possible NRL head coaching pursuit for now.

Carr earned recognition for his work as a Dragons assistant and interim coach, taking over from Anthony Griffin several years ago.

He had coached in England after leaving the Dragons, but departed midway through 2026 after Castleford Tigers let him go.

John Morris also left Wests Tigers at season's end, and the club advertised for an assistant coach on LinkedIn.

With pre-season due to begin at Concord within weeks, there has been little public detail about Marshall's other assistants.

The Tigers have farewelled Jarome Luai and several other players, while Tyson Frizell, Kurt Mann and Jake Averillo are among their arrivals.
