Wests Tigers have initiated discussions regarding the establishment of a new rugby league centre of excellence in Campbelltown, driven by their ambitious goal of creating the premier pathways system in the world.
This ambitious plan unfolds as the Tigers prepare to return to Campbelltown Stadium this Sunday for a pivotal match against Newcastle, marking the venue's transition to their primary home ground starting next year, as Leichhardt Oval will be unavailable.
In 2028, Campbelltown will undergo upgrades but is set to host seven games annually beginning in 2029, while Leichhardt will accommodate four games each season.
In recent years, the Tigers have strategically positioned themselves within the rapidly developing area of south-west Sydney, establishing offices in Campbelltown, boosting school engagement, enhancing connections with local clubs, and developing coaching links with a new selective sports school.
Despite having junior player numbers comparable to Penrith, the club has historically struggled to capitalize on the broader Macarthur region.
Throughout the 26 years of the joint venture, only six juniors from this area have reached the milestone of 100 games for the club.
Recent upgrades at Campbelltown included new dressing rooms, showcasing the Wests Tigers logo for the first time as a permanent fixture in the area.
"It is a long journey and it won't be fixed straight away," interim Tigers CEO Shaun Mielekamp remarked to AAP.
"But as long as we can outline a long-term vision as to what we want to achieve, I genuinely believe the participation numbers can dramatically explode here."
