Wests Tigers near Fainu extension

Rd 2: Wests Tigers players in World Cup

The Wests Tigers are redirecting money from Jarome Luai's release from his 2027 contract to retain Samuela Fainu, who will not test the market in November.

The Daily Telegraph reports Fainu is expected to sign a two-year extension worth $1.6 million, or $800,000 per season, with ratchet clauses taking his salary to $1 million.

The deal would align his contract's expiry with brother Sione's, after Sione signed a three-year extension in February to stay through the end of 2029.

Samuela had been linked to the PNG Chiefs, who signed Luai after he declined his player options beyond 2027.

The Tigers had feared rising back-rower salaries would encourage Fainu to seek offers, as his market value was expected to climb.

He scored four tries in 16 games this season and has played 60 games over the past three seasons.

The club also plans to extend Latu Fainu, who is part of Tonga's World Cup squad.

The brothers hoped to represent Fiji at the World Cup but lacked sufficient documentation to qualify for a switch from Tonga.
