Wests Tigers close to Fainu extension

Wests Tigers rising star forward set to make contract call

Wests Tigers are preparing for Samuela Fainu to remain at Concord, with a two-year extension reportedly close.

Code Sports reports the deal would keep the 22-year-old back-rower at the club through at least the end of 2029.

The contract is expected to be worth about $800,000 per season, with clauses potentially lifting his pay above $1 million as the salary cap rises from 2028 under the new broadcast rights deal.

Securing Fainu is viewed as important to the Tigers' prospects under coach Benji Marshall, and would prevent rivals, including the well-funded PNG Chiefs, from pursuing him when he becomes available on November 1.

The news adds to a positive outlook at Concord after a disappointing second half of the 2026 NRL season, which featured a sharp decline amid former captain Jarome Luai's mid-season interest in the PNG Chiefs.

Tyson Frizell, Kurt Mann and Jake Averillo are already due to join the Tigers in 2027.

Fainu's older brother Sione re-signed before the 2026 season, while younger brother Latu is off contract in 2028 and is currently with Tonga's World Cup squad.

Latu could be the club's next target.
