Retired Melbourne Storm star Christian Welch has shared his thoughts on the newly researched concussion headgear that Jake Trbojevic of the Manly Sea Eagles is set to wear in the 2026 season.
Having experienced eight concussions throughout his NRL career, Welch supports players exploring innovative equipment to enhance safety within the sport.
The headgear will be worn for the first time by Trbojevic, a favorite among fans, as he aims to extend his NRL career.
As a State of Origin representative, Welch advocates for the headgear brand and expresses hope that it will aid players vulnerable to brain injuries in contact sports.
This year, Trbojevic will don 'GameGear' apparel, specifically designed to mitigate concussions and other brain-related injuries incurred during play.
After experiencing some frightening concussions in-game last season, Trbojevic is determined to reduce the likelihood of ending his NRL career prematurely.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the scientific data supporting the headgear influenced his decision to try it out.
"I've never worn a headgear, and this one is a little bit different, but as I said there is a lot of research behind it, so to me it was silly if I didn't give it a go," he stated.
He added, "The fact that there is research behind it, when you get head knocks that your brain doesn't accelerate as much, I think that sort of just won me over the line. I was just all in, so I'm giving it a go and I don't really care what it looks like," Trbojevic told DT.
