Wayne Bennett has fired back at claims from Matt Lodge amidst a messy NRL contract saga, denying any 'hang up' during their discussions.
The Souths coach clarified that there was never a formal agreement in place with Lodge, who had hoped to make a move to the Rabbitohs under Bennett's guidance.
Lodge, who previously played for Manly, believed he was on the brink of joining South Sydney after initial talks, only to be left in the lurch after a phone call with Bennett ended abruptly.
The NRL journeyman expressed disappointment at the turn of events, stating that he had missed out on crucial pre-season training and income due to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
In response, Bennett acknowledged speaking with Lodge but emphasized that no concrete promises were ever made regarding his potential signing.
Despite having a desire to reunite with Lodge, whom he coached at the Broncos in 2018, salary cap constraints forced Souths to back out of any potential deal.
The wily coach made it clear that without a signed contract, nothing is set in stone in the competitive world of Rugby League.
While negotiations were progressing, they never reached a stage where financial terms were discussed.
Ultimately, circumstances on both sides prevented the deal from materializing, leaving Lodge in limbo.
