Sydney Roosters' utility Connor Watson has shared the palpable excitement in Papua New Guinea regarding the NRL's expansion, particularly the upcoming PNG Chiefs, noting that the team is a constant topic of conversation in the local media.

Watson recently participated in a physically demanding 96-kilometre hike along the Kokoda Trail with 15 other players and staff from the Roosters. This expedition was designed to enhance team cohesion as they prepare for the 2026 NRL season.

In an interview on SEN 1170 Breakfast, Watson highlighted that rugby league was the focal point of discussions during their trek, with many locals expressing eagerness about the arrival of the PNG Chiefs.

"When we got over there, there was a massive buzz," Watson said.

"Every day the back page was about who's coaching PNG or what player they're getting. Even the porters we walked with were rugby league mad."

Despite concerns related to safety and recruitment that have emerged in Australian media, Watson noted that such worries are not echoed by the local community, underscoring the deep-rooted passion for rugby league in Papua New Guinea.
