The New Zealand Warriors kicked off their 2026 season with a strong 42-18 victory against the Sydney Roosters, delighting a packed home crowd.
However, coach Andrew Webster was quick to dampen the celebratory mood following the win.
"Good to get the monkey off the back. Lots to be happy about and lots to tidy up," Webster reflected in the post-match interview.
While the Warriors showcased their attacking prowess with seven tries, Webster acknowledged that the final score might not have accurately represented the intensity of the match.
"I think the scoreline flatters us a little bit," he remarked.
He emphasized the need for improvement, particularly in their defense against a formidable Roosters side.
"Out of the whole NRL, they are the hardest to tackle, like individually," he noted.
"You have got to be on your game and make your tackles, and I just feel we didn't do that individually at times."
Several players received commendations from Webster, including forward Jackson Ford, who was seen nursing his shoulder toward the end of the match.
