The NRL world is spinning after the New Zealand Warriors were denied a penalty try in a moment that has left everyone scratching their heads.

In a match that ended in a 14-8 victory for Newcastle, a controversial call right before halftime has overshadowed the result.

The Warriors were on the brink of scoring a penalty try, with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak appearing to be illegally tackled in mid-air by Greg Marzhew in the in-goal area.

But just when it seemed like justice would be served, the Bunker swooped in.

Despite no Newcastle players being anywhere near the action, the officials decided that a penalty was enough to address the infraction.

The decision left everyone, including Fox Sports commentator Michael Ennis, dumbfounded.

"the game can be a real cliffhanger sometimes, and this is a prime example.

The Bunker confirms that Watene-Zelezniak takes the catch cleanly, only to be taken down unlawfully by Marzhew, yet it's not deemed a penalty try.

It's enough to make your head spin," said Ennis.

The Warriors will no doubt be feeling hard done by the ruling, but as they say in the world of Rugby League, you win some, you lose some.

In this case, the Warriors certainly lost one they felt they should have won.
