The New Zealand Warriors will be honouring former team doctor John Mayhew in their match against the Melbourne Storm on Sunday.

Mayhew passed away at the age of 70 after serving the club for 347 NRL games over 14 seasons.

Players and staff will pay their respects by wearing black armbands during the game.

Bunty Afoa, who was treated by Mayhew since he was a junior, is among the current Warriors who came under his care.

Other players in Sunday's lineup who were looked after by Mayhew include Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Adam Pompey, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Erin Clark, Marata Niukore, and the injured Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Mayhew was also influential in the careers of many leading players in the club, such as Stacey Jones, Awen Guttenbeil, Lance Hohaia, and Shaun Johnson.

Mayhew's tenure with the Warriors saw the team achieve significant milestones, including reaching the grand final in 2011 and making the top eight in multiple seasons.

His impact on the club and the players he cared for is evident in the lasting relationships he built.

Assistant coach Andrew Webster, who was with the club during Mayhew's time, also acknowledges the role he played in the team's success.

The decision to honour Mayhew in the match against the Storm, the same team he faced in his first match in charge in 2006, is a fitting tribute to his dedication and contribution to the Warriors.

By wearing black armbands, the players and staff aim to show their appreciation for the impact Mayhew had on the club and its athletes.

The legacy of Mayhew will continue to be remembered and celebrated by those who had the privilege of working with him.
