The New Zealand Warriors are intensifying efforts to secure Luke Metcalf's long-term future as the November 1 deadline approaches, when he can negotiate with other teams.
Metcalf, a standout playmaker this season before suffering an ACL injury, has reached the peak of his career since joining the Warriors after his time with the Cronulla Sharks.
Over the last three seasons, he transitioned from being a backup to the club's key player, honing his skills under the mentorship of former international halfback Shaun Johnson.
Contract discussions with Metcalf began in June but were temporarily shelved. However, News Corp reports that negotiations have now resumed as the Warriors aim to secure his long-term commitment.
The club has reportedly presented a revised offer to Metcalf ahead of November 1, when the Perth Bears and other rival teams can also approach him.
With the potential for a significant salary increase in his next contract, the 26-year-old might secure a seven-figure deal, influenced by the scarce market for playmakers and the demand from other clubs for a new five-eighth or halfback.
"I'm genuinely really happy here at the Warriors and here in New Zealand. My partner loves it and we have something special building so it was a no-brainer," the halfback said in 2024.
