England's head coach, Shaun Wane, has made the tough decision to drop Jack Welsby for the crucial second Ashes Test against Australia, describing it as "a gut feeling." Wane expresses that he "feels in his heart" this is the right choice as they prepare for a must-win match.

Following a disappointing 26-6 loss to Australia in the opening match of the three-game series, Wane's team faces significant pressure. The first match, held at Wembley, proved challenging, especially in the second half, prompting the need for a revival as they move to Everton's new stadium. To keep the series alive and potentially extend it to the final match on November 8 at Headingley Stadium, a victory is essential. This marks the first Ashes series since 2003.

Wane has made several adjustments to his 19-man squad. Notably, Harry Smith is poised to step in at half-back, with Mikey Lewis shifted to the bench. Jez Litten is expected to start as hooker, resulting in Daryl Clark being omitted from the lineup. Additionally, Morgan Smithies replaces Ethan Havard, and Kallum Watkins joins the squad following John Bateman's withdrawal due to an ankle injury.

The most significant decision is bringing in NRL player AJ Brimson to replace Welsby, a player Wane has relied on in the past, including appointing him as captain for a series against Tonga. Welsby did face criticism for his defensive performance during the Wembley match, particularly related to Angus Crichton's try.
