Kevin Walters Locks in First Assistant for Ashes
Australian Kangaroos head coach Kevin Walters has reportedly secured Willie Peters as part of his coaching staff for the upcoming Ashes series.
Walters, who was appointed coach on a three-game contract just a month ago, has quickly moved to assemble his team for the Kangaroos' Ashes campaign, which will be held in the United Kingdom-marking the first series in over two decades.
With the Kangaroos set to travel for the series in just over a month, Peters is expected to be officially announced as the first assistant coach.
Currently, Peters is based in England with Hull KR, where he has garnered a reputation as a future NRL head coach.
Walters aimed to include at least one Super League leader in his staff to enhance the team's understanding of English players, and News Corp has reported that the agreement with Peters is finalized.
Peters has been with Hull KR since the beginning of 2023, helping to elevate the club into a formidable Super League competitor, leading to a finals appearance in 2023 and a grand final appearance in 2024.
He was recognized as the Super League coach of the year last year, and as of this season, Hull KR sits atop the league standings with an impressive record of 20 wins out of 24 matches played so far.
